General information
Island of Malta is located in the south of the Mediterranean. From the middle ages its convenient location attracted a variety of European country rulers, in result frequent changes in leadership. In 1894 Malta came under British rule and until 1964 remained under the auspices of the queens of the sea. Even after the independence of the island remains within Commonwealth.
At present, Malta is a parliamentary republic, the member of European Union. State leaders take full advantage of its favorable geographical location and, despite the lack of resources and shortage of space that would be suitable for food production, the economy is developing in good pace and the standard of living is quite high. The island is used as a transit point to Europe, as a local production center, and is very attractive for tourists. The main areas are the financial funds and trust activities, ships and aircraft registration, and gambling.
